Park bench in Calabasas, CA

In case you've never heard of her, if you've watched tv in the seventies or eighties or have seen a movie in that time you have seen her. I'll leave you with "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."

Reminds me of a story: For a stretch of years I served as M.C. for a series of eclectic, free words-and-music shows on NYC's Hudson River Piers. At one such show we had a belly dancer as a performer. When she was done, I returned to the microphone and said "Coochie coochie!" in obvious tribute to Charo. (I had found the performance kind of exciting.) Well, a seemingly kindly old woman, who I had spoken with at previous shows, came to me during the next break. She was upset that I had referred to this woman as a "hoochie" and was seemingly denigrating belly dancing, which was an art form and required years of practice. Soon enough the old woman was chatting with the belly dancer herself and convinced her to hate me as well.
