Isa's Riddle
Isa said to me, "Name a word that is both of two things, and yet also neither of the two things at the same time."
"I give up," I replied.
"Brunch," she said, "It's both breakfast and lunch, yet it is neither as well."
"Well, in that case," I said, "My new answer is spork. Not a spoon, not a fork. Both."
Best response gets an origami prize, made by Isa.

Would PLEATHER work? I love origami!
Wait!!! Ask Isa if dogs count -- Labradoodle, Pugle, Cockapoo,Schoodle, Massweiler...
But pleather is plastic, no?

Tell Isa that these are known as "portmanteaus".
Robert: tofurkey is tofu, no?
Frank gets a creation for pointing that out.
Yes, tofurkey is tofu disguised as turkey. But isn't brunch really just breakfast served late? I've never had, say, a hamburger for brunch.
Spork, however, really is both not a spoon, not a fork, but both.
didn't rich hall used to call these sniglets on saturday night live and we all thought rich hall was a big joke? now we're the ones doing sniglets. sniglets! i'll shut this place down so fucking fast...
although there is something irresistible about them.
A sniglet is just a made up word: "A word that should d in the dictionary but isn't". So not a word, and not not a word, but both.

How about "dixiecrat?" Not literally Dixie, and certainly not a democrat.
Or "funcomfortable" -- but I'm not sure if that's a real word (only 32 results on Google, and a somewhat inconsistent application of the word).
Isa's riddle may be answered with a sniglet.
One of my favorite sniglets:
PRNDL (pronounced PREN-dull): Name for the shifter in an automatic transmission
Labradoodle, people. Send the origami this way!!!
My favorite sniglet is still "cinemuck" - the sticky stuff on the movie floor.

Since we seem to be broadening the scope of the answers, may I answer with a palindrome?
Lisa Bonet ate no basil.
We are getting way off track with palindromes. If we want that we could watch..
Star Comedy by Democrats
Sure robert, but that won't get you close to winning.
Hermaphrodite
And my favorite sniglet was flen, the crusty residue on the neck of a ketchup bottle.
Star Comedy by Democrats is excellent. My favorite palindrome is
If Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to talk while he was bound and gagged, he'd sound something like this: "Iht e kil gnih temosdn uosde! Hdegga g dnadn uobsaw!! Ehel ihw klatot de irt regge nezraw hcsdlon rafi!!!"
These are not only called "portmanteau words," but also "combonyms." There are many new ones, like "Melbow," the elbow of a guy named Mel, and "trivilous," trivial and frivilous. See http://addledwriter.blogspot.com/search?q=combonym
for more on this fascinating locution.
Fox News. It is neither a small furry member of the canine family nor is it news.
Chris, if I was in charge of the origami prize, "Fox News" would win. Even if it doesn't, I'll happily learn origami just to fold you one.
Melbow seems somewhat limited in usage.
Time's up! I will ask Isa to choose a winner.
Amy, Isa has selected you as the winner!
Send your address to more AT saltinwound.com and you will be getting your creation prize!!
Wait - Amy wins for "pleather", or for one of the dogs? Gotta be the dog - talk about trying to appeal to the judge's emotions.
It was the dogs. I tried to be fair, explaining the ones she didn't understand. I even explained the Fox News one and told her it was a good one.
I should have thought of the emotional aspect earlier and posted birderfly: not a bird, and not a butterfly, but both.
And now that Isa's made her judgement and there's no chance of her reading this (and Bernie assures me she doesn't read it anyway), I'm going to repost one I made and deleted at the start:
A vagenis. Not a vagina, and not a penis, but both.
Darn. I thought I was being so clever with vagenis, but google it and there are 28,000 entries, including a full-on definition at the urban dictionary.
It means what you think, more or less.
Robert, I was trying to help everyone by giving them the judge.
The origami prize is finished, by the way.
Bernie, best I can tell, you've negotiated these waters just fine.
No fair. She didn't even MAKE UP pleather, whereas Melbow is totally, totally original!
And those aren't even the best dog names. What about a bull-shihtzu? Or a shiht-poo? I mean, really.
Combonyms 4 evah.
Like I said, Melbow is incredibly specific.
Also, our judge is young. This isn't a fair fight.
