NY

Dianna and I spent a quick weekend in New York. We made no plans to look up friends due to lack of time, but we were walking down Broadway just as two of Dianna's friends stepped outside for a cigarette. We'd heard they were paying thirty-thousand a month for their loft, so eagerly accepted their invitation to go upstairs. I'd expected something amazing, but it was merely nice. In New York, thirty-thousand a month will get you a nice place.

Those people pay more than Heath Ledger paid for his apartment! I don't get it. If you had that kind of money, wouldn't you just buy a place?

Clearly, Heath knew what he was doing by renting.

Do we know that the 30k figure represents rent rather than a monthly mortgage payment? Then again, there probably are apartments that command such a high monthly rental in Manhattan. After all, Maya Rudolph learned that $13,000-a-month in rent isn't enough to ensure your SoHo apartment isn't riddled with bedbugs.

So you met two of Dianna's friends as they stepped outside for a smoke. Are they not allowed to smoke in the place they're paying $30,000 a month for? Not that I'm into smoking up a place but I would think for $30,000 a month you'd be able to do almost anything you damn well pleased. Do they have a baby? A roommate that's allergic to cigarette smoke? There must be a little more to this story.

Ken, I smoke, but I go outside to smoke. I won't smoke in my apartment - it smells the place up.

Robert, you should quit - it's an unattractive habit.

John, did Maya actually date Steve Jobs?

They have children, which is why they stepped outside. And yes, the thirty thousand a month for rent is the crazy part. To pay that much and not own the place. But I think neither wants to permanently settle in NY.

John, there's no more to my story. I don't want my apartment to smell. Why is that baffling?

Ken, I do remember Maya dating Steve Jobs. Also, you're right that I should quit smoking. And you know whatever that thing is that you do or don't do that bothers you but you do it anyway? You should quit that too!
