Mr. Universe

Question from my fifth grade son's math book:

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was named Mr. Universe, he had a chest measurement of 56 7/8 inches and a waist measurement of 32 1/4 inches. How much larger was his chest than his waist?

(Next to the answer, in the smallest possible writing, he wrote "why do we care?")

Isa was stumped today by a 'heroes' topic in reading. The segment was about Gloria Estefan, and for each section of her life (early childhood, then during the time she met her husband and made music, and then when she broke her back, and then recovery) Isa had to explain heroic moments in the text and write them on a worksheet. Isa couldn't find any solid examples of heroism in Gloria's high school life. "She got good grades?" Isa wailed.
I gently told her it seemed that joining a band was the answer they wanted. i wasn't even sure myself. Isa's going to have her work cut out for her and explain why Miley Cyrus is a hero, someday.

Had I written that Arnie question, I would've had them compare his freakish chest measurement to that of a standard 90-lb weaking. That would provide a little payoff, at least, and you'd still get your fraction computation in there.

Perhaps a pre and post steroids comparison of Arnold's testicle size would've also been more relevant and thought provoking.

As for Gloria Estefan, I feel Isa's pain in trying to find acts of heroism there. The back thing I guess I get. Other than that I'd have to go with the lyric
"Come on, shake your body baby do the conga... I know you can't control yourself any longa" Delivering that with conviction was a heroic act.

Not sure, but I think Gloria Estefan's most heroic acts came in the field of engineering. Wasn't she credited with inventing the Miami Sound Machine?
