Grimace, indeed

Keenan's class will soon be going on a three-day field trip to Space Camp in Montreal. (I didn't know the Canadians had a space program; then it occurred to me that this probably was the Canadian space program.) When told were told the trip would include a stop at the mega-McDonalds just on the US side of the border, the class responded with a spontaneous chorus of boos.

When I was ten, a stop at McDonald's would have been a highlight of any class trip. For many of my classmates, it would have been the sole highlight.

Simply put, the fifth graders of America don't know Mayor McCheese, and they don't care.

There are still plenty of children who would cheer at that announcement. Adults, too.

Also, Isa despises "Ronald McDonald and all other man-clowns."

I had a McDonald's triple-cheeseburger for dinner tonight.

I agree that McDonald's still has the longest line at the typical food court, but a tipping point has been reached. Once the Jack Silberts of the world begin to die off, it could go the way of the Woolworth's lunch counter.

Thanks Frank. I found it really encouraging to hear that the kids responded with derision to the idea of visiting the MegaMac. I'm actually reading Fast Food Nation at this moment (finally) and find the entire fast food world to be pretty depressing - and scary.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world these fast food chains are viewed almost as some type of gourmet dining experience. In Ecuador, where I used to spend some time every year on the way to my research sites, I actually had a conversation with the family of a friend in which a couple of them were saying they wished they could eat at MacD's every day! These weren't starving peasants, they were typically upper middle class folks - successful lawyers and one Supreme Court justice (Ecuadorian) among them. Ecuador is the home of some truly wonderful cuisine (the popularity of Guinea Pig among some locals notwithstanding).
Kudos to Keenan and Keenan's classmates!
