The Morning Paper
I still subscribe to the local daily newspaper, the Albany Times Union, in spite of (or perhaps because of) its increasingly anachronistic nature. For example, our comics page contains at least five deceased authors: Charles Schulz, Dik Browne, Abigail Van Buren, Bil Keane, and Isaac Asimov (Isaac Asimov's Super Quiz; ironically, today's topic is 'people who died in 2007'). Johnny Hart and Hank Ketcham have only just been replaced, and Mort Walker and Jack Elrod are not long for this earth.
Anyway, as part of an effort to attract a more youthful demographic, the paper has been featuring blog excerpts on the front page of its local section. They are devoid of context and often cryptic, possibly appealing to no one at all. Here is today's excerpt:
"This year, for the first time since I became single, I am going to get a Christmas tree. After all the stuff that's happened the past two months, I need to. Plus, my parents are coming up to my place for Christmas. So, I kind of have to get a tree. I accept right now that I am not going to like this process one bit"
I am sparing you the link.

You've inspired me to google and find as many working dead cartoonists as possible. So far I see Chic Young no longer gets credited for Blondie (unless someone out there is printing classic Blondies, along with the new one still being churned out every day). Does a dead guy still write the Hardy Boys?
Notably, Omar Sharif saw fit to get his name off of the bridge column while still living. This is from his Wikipedia entry:
In 2006 when he was asked if he still played bridge he responded: "I've stopped altogether. I decided I didn't want to be a slave to any passion any more except for my work. I had too many passions, bridge, horses, gambling. I want to live a different kind of life, be with my family more because I didn't give them enough time."
Wow. Poor Omar's passions really separated him from his family.
Although I always assumed it was the cigarettes.
I don't know how one distinguishes "bridge" from "work".
Amanda's grandma Ruthie was an expert bridge player and even wrote a book just for friends and family. My favorite tip of her 8 tips about "What Bridge Should Mean To You" is...
8. DO NOT FUSS AT YOUR PARTNER UNTIL YOU YOURSELF CAN PLAY A PERFECT GAME.
That's just great advice for life.
