Foul!

Connie Hawkins was one of my two favorite basketball players of all time. He landed with the Lakers after squandering his talents with the Globetrotters and then in the old ABA, followed by a great run with the Phoenix Suns. By the time, he got here, the Hawk was still capable of dominating games in brief stretches though no longer of the consistency to carry a team.
Hawkins played here in the years after Wilt but before Kareem, when the Lakers had no chance of winning, when no one could believe in the team except for a kid. There's something wonderful about rooting for a team without a prayer. It's like rooting for an indy band. The Rolling Stones don't need you and neither do the Yankees.
Tonight, the Lakers face Orlando. This team is going nowhere. Why not trade Kobe and really have some fun?

Connie Hawkins was George Gervin before George Gervin was George Gervin. Great sprawling wingspan and amazing finger rolls. The Lakers won't trade Kobe this season which could be a good thing for both parties. If he continues to have a good scoring season and shows that he's still a fierce competitor even though he's not happy being here, well, his stock might go up again. Then he can get out of town, and the Lakers can actually get something for him.
It is fun to root for a loser though. I used to root for the Dallas Mavericks when they were awful back in the early 80's. It was great. No expectations, no disappointment. When they started winning and made the playoffs, it got heartbreakingly difficult to see them go down to the Lakers and other superior teams.
I actually posted a basketball entry today as well at my blog site. Clippers stuff.

Chris, I didn't like Dunleavy when he coached the Lakers either.
I know! He coasted that first season with the Lakers and then they tanked the next season. I even blame him for Magic getting AIDS.
