The first ten minutes

It's good to know that the first ten minutes of Juno will be trying. I don't go to the movies that often, and the Spectrum usually has as many as four or five films of potential interest. When I go, I take note of the starting times, which tend to be staggered by ten minutes. If the film I've paid for doesn't grab me within ten minutes, I switch theaters. (Micaela does this too, though less often.)

I've switched theaters to avoid treatments of mid-life crises, self-pitying protagonists, scenes of senseless brutality, inadequate projection-bulb brightness, and films that are not films but digital video. I've probably missed some decent films, but I've never regretted switching.

i have a hairtrigger, not just for movies. bernie knows that when we fly to hawaii for our anniversary, if there's something i don't like about the check-in system, we could easily turn around at the last minute. also if, once we're on the plane, i need to leave to win an argument with a power mad flight attendant. a lot can happen.

Power madness is one of my many pet peeves. It's close to the top of my list.

i'm being coy about the date in case thieves read this, but i think i've made it clear, even if they knew the date, that there's every chance we're turning around at the last minute.

Thieves read blog entries, but not the comments, so you're safe.

Frank, just curious: what movies have you switched away from.

my point is i'm safe anyway, because i'm already angry at the flight attendant, and when she says do i we have a problem and do i want to continue on this flight, i'll say i don't want to continue on her terms. so i will be home.

Leaving Las Vegas, Stepford Wives, one I think called Human Nature with Tim Robbins. The titles of these unwatched films tend not to stick with me. More recently, The Savages was a close call but I'm glad I stuck it out.
