Geographic mismatch

The draw for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers was held the other day, and the US will get to play the winner of Dominica vs. Barbados. Combined, these countries are 1/50th of the size of Los Angeles and 1/1000th the size of the US.

At left is the very cartoonish Dominican coat of arms.

Frank, that can't be right - that would mean that Los Angeles is only 1/20th the size of the US.

I would say the combined sizes of Dominica and Barbados would be almost equal to Los Angeles (and I do mean "Greater Los Angeles"

OK, it seems there is demand for actual numbers:

Los Angeles County = 10 million
United States = 300 million
Barbados = 300 thousand
Dominica = 50 thousand
Albany, NY = 100 thousand

Oh - you're talking about population! I'd thought that by "size" you meant "area". Makes way more sense now.

Robert, I should have warned you, he has a PhD in Geography-- he wouldn't make such a mistake
